When you head to the store to purchase your sandpaper, you will notice several different types with stated numbers on each. Those numbers indicate how coarse, or fine the sandpaper is. This is the "grit" of the sandpaper. A higher number means the sandpaper is smoother.
There is a variety of sandpaper, including fine and coarse grains. The roughness of sandpaper depends on the size of the little bits on it. Lower numbers indicate coarse sandpaper, such as 40 or 60. It is effective at removing large amounts of material fast. Medium grit sand paper will have numbers such as 80 or 100. So it is good for polishing rough edges. Fine sandpaper would be higher numbers such as 220 or 320. This is ideal to make your project smooth.
For example, when you are selecting sandpaper for a project, consider what you are working on and how much sanding you will have to do. Choose coarse grit sandpaper for rough surfaces that will require a lot of material to be taken off. Use sandpaper of medium grit to smooth all minor bumps. Use fine grit sandpaper to get smooth and final surface.
The first thing you'll notice is that there can be confusion about sandpaper grits at first, but once you know what each is for, it becomes easier to make a good choice. Whether for wood, metal, or plastic, there is a grit for every sanding requirement.
How your project comes out depends a lot on the grit of sandpaper you chose. Using sandpaper that is too coarse could damage what you are working on. Use too fine sandpaper and it might take an eternity to get rough areas smooth. Depending on the grit of the sandpaper, you can achieve an outstanding polished project.
