How to Use a Deck Belt Sander
It’s very easy to use a deck belt sander when you practice. The first thing you need to do is choose the right grit sandpaper. Begin with rough grit to remove any previous finish or bumps on the deck. Next, use a finer grit to smooth the surface for staining or painting.
Then switch on the deck belt sander and run it back and forth along the deck in a nice, even motion. Be sure to overlap your passes just a bit so that you sand evenly. Always keep the sander moving or else it will mark the wood; You can even use a hand sander for any tricky spots when you are done sanding the entire deck.
Consider the size of your deck and the finish you prefer when buying a deck belt sander. For small decks or touch-up areas, a handheld belt sander will do the job. But for larger decks or large projects, you may need a larger, stronger sander.
There are a lot of benefits to using a deck belt sander, beyond improving the appearance of your deck. It saves you time and energy when you compare it to sanding by hand, and it lets you achieve a more uniform finish. A belt sander can also strip old paint or finish faster, allowing you to get your deck done sooner.
So while using a deck belt sander, it is critical to follow all safety guidelines. And make sure to wear eye protection, a dust mask and ear protection at all times for protection against dust and noise. Always keep both hands on the sander and hold it tight. Avoid applying too much pressure onto the sander, since that can lead to uneven sanding and damage the deck.
And also be sure to follow the maker’s instructions for its use and for changing sandpaper belts. Inspect the sandpaper frequently for flaking, and replace it when its no longer efficient in order to maintain a smooth finish.
